Episode 11 show notes!!

Episode 11Monday 12th of February

Only a week later than planned due to illness, starting with toddle chops and ending in all of us!
Knitting

One FO toddler socks

New cast on…. Weasley sweater for me in Hayfield Aran bonus in purple

Swatching for some new designs…..

1 shawl…. In Owl About Yarn Tibetan Owl….

1 toy in Aran weight alpaca…

Another shawl which is being swatched in my smooshie base (azure) but will eventually be knit up in RiverKnits’ glorious Splendiferous base in Silberman Mond or silver moon….
Wound the yarn to cast on the next two pairs of vanilla socks…

Both are weavers loft, which I picked up at Wonderwool last year no colourway names, but they are 75% super wash wool 25% nylon

One for James and one for Dad….

Crochet

I’ve balled up the masham and mystery hand spuns and have decided to crochet a log cabin style blanket out of them…. Mainly for ease and the fact it grows sooooo quickly!!
Aside… I love the way these Masham skeins have balled up!!
Acquisitions

Ummmm so before we get into sewing…. I’ve a few…. Ahem…… Acquisitions to admit to……

1 tartan off cuts…. One bag thereof…

Flannelette cotton

Four colours of Sherpa fleece….

Green sweatshirt material….

Waterproof fabric

White terry towelling fabric
And I’m still waiting on some pretty pink cottons and some ribbing fabrics I ordered….

Eek!!!
Sewing

So it’s been three weeks and I have just about three projects finished….

The first two are the Bucket hats by Oliver and S which I have made out this tractor fabric…. One is for William, the other for a little friend of his!!

The second is an AJ Aviator hat by Made by Jacks Mum….

This one is for James and I have started the one for William today!!
I have been finding crawling about on the floor increasingly not fun for cutting out so I have now spent a chunk of time and cut out a few big sewing projects, smaller one I can manage at my table….
I have cut out a blue coco by Tilly and the buttons

A grain line studios Linden in the green foxy fabric

An Agnes by Tilly and the Buttons in black for the body green for the sleeves,

A load of the AJ aviator hats….

Plus I still have a fleece jumper cut out to sew, though I don’t think it will now fit toddle chops, it will have to wait for his little brother to grow into it!!
Spinning

I’ve managed a fair amount of spinning these past few weeks despite illnesses….

All working on this Pomegranate colourway from John Arbon, which I picked up from Wonderwool a few years back now!!
I have Navajo or chain plied it and I am definitely finding that easier the more I practice!!! But Amy Beth of the Fat Squirrel speaks has alerted me to another ply variety called thread plying so I think I may try that on next on the gorgeous purples I have also from John Arbon…. And thread ply it with one of the beautiful cones of yarn I was gifted an age ago!!! That way I’d get a really great yardage from it…. Who know maybe even sweater yardage?!?! Or part of a sweater!!!
Weaving

Unfortunately something had to give in these past weeks with illness…. And weaving was it…. Plus I keep forgetting to ask James to help me pull the weaving round the loom so I can start the next section!! But I reckon I’m well over halfway…
Shop update

Well last Friday saw the release of the Lovehearts hat!!!! It’s available so far in my Etsy shop and in my Ravelry Pattern store!!! So head on over and have a snoop if you’d like!!!
I’m planning to release the next one…. broadleaf around the time I next Podcast….
I am also putting a call out for test knitters for the coniferous hat…. All the details will be in the Ravelry group!!
Baking

So these past two weeks we’ve been a bit more kitchen productive again after a small hiatus post Christmas!!!
I tried to make a apple pie I saw a video for in Facebook, watched once and then couldn’t find again…..

It actually turned out great!!!! I’ll make a few tweaks and make it again…. Then blog what I did!

And then I made banana loaf cakes!!!! As toddle chops went off bananas when he was ill, loads went really ripe and almost over…. So I went on the interwebs and BBC good food gave me a fab recipe for banana loaf cakes.
On the same day as we had the oven all fired up through the day rather than just ticking over James made a vat of spag Bol, a pot of leek and potato soup (his go to Delia Recipe!) and a lasagne for tea!! Yum!!
Farm Update!

Well there has been snow….

Colds….

Cold wet weather…

Hail…..

So we’ve done a fair bit indoors, finishing off bits of the house, glossing door returns…. Glossing the under stairs cupboarding….

James has built housing for his electric fencing gubbins….

And he has been collecting wood like no tomorrow!! Phew!!!

The chicken have gone onto adult food…. And Dai has even started to try and crow!!! I shall try and insert an audio clip…. If not I might be able to Facebook his proto crowing or get it onto the blog!!! Sounds rather pitiful though but he is improving daily!! (Our poor neighbours!!)

We have had another growth scan on baby two… And I’ve started washing all the clothes to freshen them up….. Next is the car seat and the baby seats and we built the cot at the weekend!!
Giveaway

Before coming on air I updated the spreadsheet I have been keeping on the giveaway entries and ran a random number generator……

Drum roll

The winners of the Alpaca are…..

Anita from Gaga knits on YouTube!!

Angeiship13 on Instagram!!

Please PM/DM/ message me your postal addresses and I will get the yarn parcelled up and off to the post office the next opportunity I have!!!!
That’s all folks!!

Episode 10!

Episode 10 of the podcast
Sunday 21st January
Knitting:

Finished James’ Vanilla socks

Half finished some toddler socks for William, from my toddler sock pattern available on Rav, LoveKnitting and in the Etsy shop.

Started knitting up a secret shawl pattern!!! Using RiverKnits Indian Giant Squirrel.

First designed this shawl for my granny for James and my wedding, now reknitting to check the pattern before writing it up for release!!!
Spinning:

So I have finished up some bobbins and skeined them up…..

Mystery yarn

Sara’s Texture Crafts BFL no clue as to the colourway….

Wheeldale woolcrafts merino silk blend in the heathers colourway

All of these have been spun half and half onto two bobbins then plied using my lazy Kate and made into two ply yarn, all about 145m from 100 g which would make them maybe a chunky yarn….
These now need washing, thwacking etc to set them…
Adelaide Walker Masham wool in four colours spun up as singles

And I have had my first try at Navajo or chain plying, which makes a three ply yarn!!! Rather pleased, but I reckon it’s going to come off the bobbin very squirly….

So I’m leaving it to sit a rest a bit first…. Hardest part about the Navajo ply was keeping the tension on the yarn coming from the bobbin…. Plus elements of the initial spin were over spun and squiggly….
Going to keep trying though because I like the way there is no orphaned yarn on the bobbin….
Sewing:

I have three FO’s

Puts me on track for one a week for 2018!!

The Fitted Tee by Elemeno Patterns

The Coco dress by Tilly and The Buttons

The Bucket Hat by Oliver and S
Plan to cut out and make another bucket hat in the tractor fabric this week and watch my seam allowances…. I think I need to actually measure my seam allowances to make sure I get them as asked for!!!
Weaving:

Over halfway on the loom…

Sheepy friends are doing well out in the fields….

Things to entertain William have restarted in the form of forest school and nursery tots group…

New yarns in store!!

I had a heap of locally sourced alpaca fleeces back last year that I sent off to be spun….

I grossly underestimated the amount of time it would take me to skein up….. but I have finally done three out of the four cones that came back from the Border Mill!!

And they are now in the Etsy shop as limited editions!!!

There are three colours, Caramel, grey and Charcoal!!

And I love them all!!

They are soooooo soft and warm and snuggly!!!

It’s an Aran/worsted weight yarn and knits up beautifully!!! So if you fancy grabbing yourself a skein……

Head over to the Etsy Shop!!!

And keep your eyes peeled….. the black alpaca is coming soon, plus a chance to win a skein or two of this gorgeous yarn on my podcast later this week!!!

So a couple of weeks in…

My challenges for this year seem to be going well!!! I have claimed nap time as my spin weave and sew time and although I have not necessarily managed all three each day I’m getting at least two in!!!

The weaving in half way I reckon!!

The spinning is going really well!!!

I’ve skeined a surprise bobbin of mystery fibre up…..

I’ve finally finished a BFL roving that languished on my wheel for two years!!!

I’ve spun a lovely skein of heathers merino silk blend!!!

I’ve also got some FOs in both my knitting and my sewing!!! Hoping for one more sewn FO at least by the end of the week!! But you’ll have to watch the podcast to see those!!! 😉

A little crafty teaser

I have managed to finally sort, get tech edited, re-sort, re-knit, re-photograph, gauge swatch etc etc!!!!! A load of hat patterns!!!!! Need to do a final go through and resend to the wonderful tech editor….. but here are some teasers!!!

Sooooo early in the New Year there will be a raft of pattern ready for release into the wild and I shall be looking for test knitters!!!!

So if the teasers pique your interest and you would like to be one of my test knitters for the hat patterns head over to the Ravelry group early in the New Year for a chance to sign up for a test knit spot and free copies of the patterns!!!

All are quick and easy knits!!!!

Lots of new additions to the shop!!!!

I’ve been a busy bee out in the workshop and generally here at the small holding and have produced a few new bits and bobs for my Etsy shop

What do you all think?!

Pop over to the shop to have a looks at these and all the other bits and bobs I have in there!!!

More will be added each day for the foreseeable!! So keep checking in and maybe you might find that elusive last few little Christmas presents?!!!!

Tyddyn Bryn on Etsy!!!

Also have you seen the most recent podcast?! Over on the Tyddyn Bryn YouTube channel for anyone who wants to watch a bit about my crafting and some general farm happenings!!

Episode 8!!!

New Podcast recorded Wednesday 22nd November 2017

Hello and welcome

Been at least 2 months since my last podcast

We’ve been really busy….. Visitors at the farm in the form of my Dad, and James’ parents both twice!

We’ve built a workshop

Had a lot of stuff done round the place, but I’ll update you on that in the around the farm happenings at the end!
So on with Knitting!!

I’ve finished two sets of little person socks, one just last evening….

Both are knitted up in Tyddyn Bryn sock yarn, one is the rainbow colourway, the other in some leftover blues….

I’ve knit up three yes three Weasley Sweaters. The pattern is free on Rav and by Alison Hansel… One is for William in the toddler size, then one each for my niece and nephew for Christmas, so my nephew who is five has the medium child and my niece the small adult size…

I knit William’s first as per the pattern and need to sew up, after that I knit the niece and nephews in the round!! Yay no sewing up, just ends. Now I need to complete the Duplicate stitching on the fronts for the lettering…. Any suggestions for a good tutorial for me to watch to see how to do the lettering?! It’s a new thing for me to do!! Eek!!

I cast on last night for my next Xmas knit…. Some socks for Dad, using this cortina sock wool, which the lovely Jen from Owl About Yarn gave me. I’m not sure at the moment but I think for Dad and James it may be a bit thin…. And not so hard wearing… So I’m going to knit an inch or so then decide whether I hold the yarn doubled to knit slightly thicker socks….

Lots of Xmas knitting plans now over the next month but I obviously won’t be able to talk much about them in case the giftees are watching!!!

Sewing….

Cor I did this load of sewing AGES ago now….

I have finished the lounge curtains all hemmed and hung and everything!!!

I’ll try and insert a pic, otherwise look out for em in the photo segments!!

Ive managed to make two pairs of cord trousers for young sir… From the simplicity pattern I’ve shown you previously pattern number 1566. They fit him lovely in the largest size… So this is the last time I’ll use this pattern for him!! I have another pattern for joggers that goes up to age three I think which I’ll have to dig out!!

I’ve finished one set of dungarees using the simplicity pattern 1566.

Now William has a long body and shorter legs so I was a little trepidatious about the pattern working ok on him…. Especially as I didn’t have popper tape just my prom popper inserter…. So he has worn them twice…. And each time I feel I’m constantly redoing up the poppers right in the crotch…. So these are shelved now and will be used for small bean due in March!!! Who we have found out is also a boy!!

I have another pair of the dungarees cut out… In the brown cord… This time I think so he can wear them a bit I will sew the bottoms as trousers not poppered legs, which will give plenty of seam allowance to use at the crotch… It means they’ll just be on and off able as a whole garment but I’ll live with that!!

Plans on the sewing front include making up the pile of stuff I’ve got cut out, recovering the kitchen chairs, recovering cushions for the lounge… Then I’ve got loads of patterns and fabric stashed to work through!!
Acquisitions….

So…. Since my last Podcast…. And basically since we moved… I’ve obviously acquired all the Hayfield Bonus Aran to do the Weasley sweaters…. And enough t DK myself one after Xmas knitting is finished!! Which I probably won’t be able to wear till after the baby is born!!

I’ve been lucky enough to be able to make a flying visit to the lovely West Wales Wool Show in Narberth and the lovely Zoe of Pins and Needles and Jen of Owl About Yarn have been busy bees at various yarn shows, but we’re kind enough to take some time up north and visit a few yarn stalls for me!!!

Soooo my yarny acquisitions are:

River knits; mermaid, shroom, Indian giant squirrel and so what if I’m a pansy.

Fleabubs and Lala;

Mothy and the squid;

Owl About Yarn; Tibetan owl

Mum has been busy knitting and shopping too!!

William and James have both had new matching hats!!! James has barely taken his off, William has made a game of removing his and running off!! Ahh toddlers!!!

Mum has sent me a couple of gifts too,

A lush apron dress which should continue to fit as an extra layer even as I get bigger!!

And a yarn goddess T shirt!!!

Both of which I think she got at Ally Pally where she went this year and did a couple of workshops!! I’m now waiting on her to visit so she can show me what she learnt… Double knitting etc!!!

I’m sure I’ve acquired a few other bits, but can’t for the life if me remember!!
Other crafty things….

So no longer just the podcast just knitting and stitching!!

I’m going to start including some of the other crafty things I’m getting up to.

I’ve been repainting and fixing a dolls house originally made by mainly Dad and a bit myself as a teaching resource, to make it into a barn for the small boy to play with….

I’ve started to make a sign for the front of the house…. I’ve planed and sanded a chunk of oak, which was part of the original barn roof, used my pyrography tool to burn the lettering for the name…. Realising about three letters in we have the longest house name in the world!! I’m now varnishing it many many times so it survives the weather up here!!

I’ve made little man his own workbench for the workshop so he can play while we get in with some things out there…. It’s one of those things I’ll gradually add to….
Cooking…

We had a load of apples to process so I’ve made apple jelly, stewed Apple, and apple cakes and scones!!

We grew an enormous marrow so I’ve made marrow chutney, using James Martins recipe off the BBC website!

I’ve made some chocolate caramel crackers and there is a blog post in TyddynBryn.com with the recipe!

I’ve made my own mincemeat this year for mince pies!! Using the Delia Smith recipe on the BBC website

Delia also came up trumps with a fab leek and potato soup recipe this month!! Well worth a go if you like soups!!
Shop update

No shop update this time but it’s something I’m slowly getting to!!!

I shall be putting a call out soon for test knitters for a few different patterns, keep an eye on Instagram and in the Rav groups etc for those!!

I am also trying to wind all the lovely alpaca yarn into skeins and get that into the shop, but so far each time I get the niddy noddy out a small human makes off with it or tries to help….

I am also working on a few other items for the shop…. But these will be hush hush till such time as I’m ready for a reveal!!!
Farm happenings!!

We have done LOADS!! I’ve done some more in depth blog posts recently over in tyddynbryn.com, and a photo story on here, but a quick run down is:

Built, furnished, moved stuff into a workshop in Barn one,

Built a polytunnel frame, which just needs some more base securing before its skinned out,

Built a fruit cage frame, ready to mesh skin

Planted a box and forsythia hedge

Had a ton of fencing done with gates and everything cos we are posh like that!! Lol.

Had the hedges cut

Cleared out and sorted side one of barn one,

Collected and processed some wood…. Loads still to go!!

Planted bulbs

Chickens!!! (If you missed the live hatching back at the end of September the video is in the Tyddyn Bryn Facebook group and one hatches at about 38 minutes or about then!!)

Etc etc!!!

I hope you enjoy the photo story!!!

Finally

Tyddyn Bryn out and about

We have decided to try and go out and explore our local area as much as we can…. Which hasn’t been much yet…. But we’ll get there!!! So far William and I have started going to a Forest school toddler group and we have been to Poppit Sands for a wander and some lunch! Lovely beach!!

Here’s the last photo story!!
