Why I am Choosing Sustainable and Slow Fashion

When I first started thinking about the clothes and textiles I surround myself with, I realised it’s not just about style—it’s about impact. From the fibres I choose to the dyes I use, every decision affects not only the planet, but also my health and wellbeing. That’s why I am choosing to focus on sustainable, slow fashion, and I want to share some of why it matters to me.

1. The Vibrations of Fabric

Did you know that the materials we wear can literally affect our energy and wellbeing? Natural fibres like wool, linen, and cotton carry a different “vibration” compared to synthetic fibres. Unlike petrochemical-based fabrics, natural fibres breathe, move with your body, and interact harmoniously with your skin. Wearing natural fibres feels more comfortable, soothing, and grounding—almost like a daily mindfulness practice. You can read more about this idea of vibrations in fabrics and how natural textiles influence wellbeing.

2. Microplastics Are Everywhere

One of the biggest hidden harms of fast fashion is microplastics. Every time synthetic fibres like polyester or acrylic are washed, tiny plastic particles enter our waterways. These microplastics are not only a threat to marine life—they’ve been found in drinking water, food, and even the air we breathe. Choosing natural fibres helps reduce your contribution to this global problem and keeps your clothes biodegradable and safe for the environment.

3. Your Skin Is Your Biggest Organ

We often forget that our skin is our largest organ. It absorbs what it touches. Fabrics made with harsh chemicals, synthetic dyes, or petrochemical fibres can irritate skin or even affect overall health over time. Natural fibres are breathable, soft, and free from toxic residues, making them safer for sensitive skin and everyday wear. Slow fashion isn’t just better for the planet—it’s a health-conscious choice for you.

4. Slow Fashion Supports Mindful Living

When you invest in slow fashion, you’re embracing a slower, more mindful way of living. Every item has a story: from the sheep that produced the wool to the dyer who crafted the colour. Choosing fewer, higher-quality pieces encourages you to value what you wear, care for it, and enjoy it longer, rather than buying cheap fast fashion that ends up in landfill far too quickly, and that doesn’t even scratch the surface of the issues I have with fast fashion, from the production methods, to the shipping there are too many rabbit holes for one blog post!

5. Clothing and Health Are Connected

Sustainable fashion ties into overall health and lifestyle, just like the food we eat. Choosing fibres that are natural, chemical-free, and ethically sourced is similar to choosing organic, nutrient-rich foods. Just as our diet affects our bodies, the fabrics we wear affect our comfort, energy, and even our emotional wellbeing. Wool, linen, and cotton allow your skin to breathe, regulate temperature, and feel soft and nourishing against your body.

6. Every Choice Makes a Difference

Ultimately, my decision to create and wear slow, sustainable fashion comes down to caring—about the planet, the people who produce textiles, and my own health. Small actions like choosing natural fibres, supporting local producers, and avoiding synthetic microplastics add up. Over time, they cultivate a more mindful, conscious lifestyle that honours both people and nature and if you know me at all you will see my love for the natural world.

Final Thoughts

Sustainable fashion isn’t just a trend—it’s a lifestyle. By choosing natural, ethically produced fibres, you’re protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and nurturing your own wellbeing. It’s a holistic approach: from the vibrations of the fabrics we touch, to the chemicals our skin avoids, to the microplastics we keep out of our oceans.
